Housed in a an ancient building that was once a granary which provided for the royal family, La Sultana was renovated in 2001 in partnership with the Ministry of Culture. It lies adjacent to the Saadian Tombs, which were designed in the 16th century for Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur as burial grounds for the royal family. The tombs are generally regarded to be one of the best preserved monuments of Saadian-era Moorish architecture in all of Africa. Standing on the terrace of La Sultana, you are afforded a rare view of the tombs from above. You can read this fascinating article for an in-depth exploration of La Sultana’s place in history.

Elegant, exquisitely appointed, and yet imminently comfortable common rooms await discovery around every corner. The library, with its warm yellow walls, ornate wood-paneled ceiling, and this charming fireplace, was one of our favorite solitary retreats.
